- Drive from Kraków: around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes each way.
- Auschwitz I: roughly 1.5 to 2 hours moving through the exhibition buildings.
- Transfer to Birkenau: a few minutes by shuttle or vehicle.
- Auschwitz-Birkenau: another 1.5 hours or so to walk the grounds.
Add it up and a private day trip from Kraków typically runs six to seven hours door to door, including both driving legs.
Can it be done faster?
It's possible to move through more quickly, but most visitors find the site isn't one to rush. Because entry can be tied to a specific time slot, there's also a natural pace to the day that's hard to compress.
Combining it with something else
Some visitors extend the day by combining Auschwitz-Birkenau with the Wieliczka Salt Mine, which sits roughly between Oświęcim and Kraków. Done as a single private trip, the combined day usually runs ten to twelve hours, which sounds long on paper but works well when the transport and timing are handled for you.
The best time to start
An early departure — leaving Kraków by 7:30 or 8:00am — gives the most flexibility, avoids the busiest midday hours at the memorial, and still leaves the afternoon free once you're back in the city.
