Wieliczka Salt Mine is famous for what visitors can see, but the numbers behind it are worth knowing too — they explain why the site feels so vast, even though tourists only ever see a small fraction of it.
How deep does it go?
The mine's full network of shafts and chambers descends to over 300 metres at its lowest levels. The tourist route, by contrast, stays within the upper section, reaching a maximum depth of around 135 metres — still deep enough that the descent is broken into stages, with a wooden staircase for the way down and a lift for the way back up.
How large is the mine?
In total, Wieliczka's tunnels stretch for roughly 300 kilometres across more than nine levels. The tourist route covers about two kilometres of that — a small, carefully chosen slice that includes the mine's most impressive chambers.
A working mine, once
Salt was extracted here continuously from the 13th century until commercial mining stopped in the 1990s. That history is part of what visitors are walking through: original tools, transport routes and support structures dating back centuries, alongside the carved chapels added by miners in their own time.
